Follow your heart and you’ll find the right lover and job

“You’ve got to find what you love and that is as true for work as it is for lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking and don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you’ve found it.” Steve Jobs

Finding the right thing to do is as difficult as finding the right person. If you marry the wrong person, you’ll never be happy. The same goes for work. Do a job you don’t love and you’ll never be truly happy.

The best work is done by those who love what they’re doing. When you find a job that you love, it no longer becomes work, it becomes an obsession that you will excel at.

Never settle for a job you don’t love. Doing a job you don’t love is the same as marrying someone you don’t love. Life becomes a burden. Happiness would always be out of reach.

If you haven’t found what you love, keep looking. As with a lover, the job that you’ll love is out there somewhere. Use the same strategy in finding the right job as you would in finding the right lover. Trying different jobs is the equivalent of dating. Rather than lowering your standards, look in the right places and you’ll find the right job, and the right lover.

Finding one will make you content. Finding both will make you happy and successful.

Greatness is for those who find their passion, not those who want to be great

“You don’t become great by trying to be great. You become great by wanting to do something, and then doing it so hard that you become great in the process.” Randall Munroe

The best way to become great is to look at how others before you have done it. Look at Leonardo Da Vinci, Beethoven, Shakespeare, Einstein, Rembrandt, James Dean, Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor and everyone else whom you consider great. They all have something in common. They became great by doing what they loved.

Their greatness didn’t show until they found their passion. Some of them were poor, so you have to make a choice; doing what makes you come alive, even if it means dying poor, or doing what others think you should do to be successful. Sometimes one leads to the other, but not always.

Find something that makes your head ache because you love it so much. Find something that you love so much you’d do it for free. Find something that you can’t stop doing, or dreaming about. Find something that consumes you. Find something that ignites your passion and emotions.

Do it so hard that you sometimes have trouble breathing. Spend every waking and dreaming moment thinking about it.

In doing so, you will become great at what you’re doing.

By that point, you will not care if you become great: you will be too busy doing what you love.

Paid to play

“When you’re doing the work you’re meant to do, it feels right and every day is a bonus, regardless of what you’re getting paid.” Oprah Winfrey

What this means is that within everyone there is something which they enjoy doing. Find that which you love and make that your life’s endeavor. Once you can do that, work will be something you enjoy and look forward to the rest of your life, not something which you must do for a paycheck. Getting a paycheck is just an added bonus.
